On Death

You and I have a destination,
always with eyes looking ahead.

Our meeting was chance,
perhaps
so will our end.

I was driving to see you once,
a man in a van smashed
into the rear of my car.

He was chastising me;
I was accused of stopping
for a squirrel crossing.

His bumper sticker said,
Live life so the preacher
doesnt have to lie at your funeral.

Perhaps this day,
tens of years from now
will be the day I die
or the day of my funeral.

Perhaps you will be there,
making the wrong arrangements.

Perhaps we will have
lost touch.

If the preacher lies
it will be because his conception
of good is common,
or he doesnt know me.

He will say,
“Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever.” (Psalm 37:3,4,27)

I dont believe in god
and I dont believe in
good or evil.

If I have a headstone
I hope you tell them that.
